8 unignorable signs your inspired work is calling you
Your inspired work is calling you. Have you yet answered its call? By all means, you could choose to ignore it – most of us do in the beginning. However, you need not worry that you will miss the call because your inspired work will continue to beckon you. In fact, its call will never end.
First, let us remember who it is that is doing the calling – it’s you. The broader, all-knowing, non-physical part of you. The part of you that you may refer to as your inner being, your soul, Source, the Universe, God, or your own personal deity of choice. For the purposes of this story, I am going to refer to that part of you as your “inner being”.
It is also helpful to remember what you are being called to. Your inner being is calling you to all that you have asked for. To the fulfillment of your heart’s true desires. To your fullest expression. To your unique contribution. To that which wants to be birthed through you. You are being called along an evolutionary path that provides opportunities for receiving as much abundance, creativity, and joy as you allow. Your inner being is calling you to live your inspired work.
Your inspired work does not have a single form nor does its path have a finite destination. It is an ever-unfolding journey to the realization of all that you continue to ask for. As long as you live your life, your desires will continue to expand and you will continue to be called along the path.
So given all the above, why would we choose to ignore the call of our inspired work? We don’t mean to, it’s just that its signs can be easy to miss.
The easier to ignore signs
The call of our inspired work is subtle and until we are intentional about listening for it, we may overlook the signs:
- A soft nudge of “yes”
- An unhurried impulse to act
- A tingle of excitement
- An unexplored curiosity
- An intriguing idea
- A desire to create
- A moment of clarity
- A profound knowing
While the ability to hear the call of inspired work can be honed with practice, we all have some tendencies that block our ability to listen, including those incessant thoughts that form our limiting beliefs, the habitual retelling of old stories, being overcome with fear, or engaging in behaviours such as self-doubt, self-loathing, or self-recrimination.
There are other behaviours that can also make us deaf to our inner being. Sometimes we care too much what other people think and are listening to their opinions instead of our own. Or we are obsessing over a future outcome rather than being present to the now. Or we are fixated on world events rather than the authority we have in our own lives. Or we are railing against what is rather than creating it how we want it to be.
But none of this is cause for concern because if you choose to ignore the call of your inspired work, it will only get louder – loud enough that you cannot ignore it anymore.
The unignorable signs
If you have been ignoring the call of your inspired work for an extended period of time, it may have gotten so loud that its sweet sound has distorted into the moans of suffering. You may be experiencing this as one or more of the following:
- Annoyance/Irritation: Those pesky ideas that there is something “more” for your life keep floating through your awareness. You swat them away, but they just won’t leave you alone.
- Sadness/Sorrow: You’ve been suppressing your heart’s true desires and have convinced yourself that where you are is where you will always be.
- Envy/Resentment: It seems like others “get all the breaks”. Secretly, some part of you wants to do what they are doing, but the opportunities never present themselves.
- Frustration/Impatience: You are aware that you would like to change your situation, however, you feel stymied about the way forward so, to your own dismay, you continue to stay where you are.
- Anger/Rage: If you have felt stuck for an extended period of time, your frustration may have devolved into a real sense of powerlessness causing you to lash out.
- Lethargy/Depression: You barely recognize yourself anymore and are confused about where you fit into the scheme of things, so you stagnate, making life so uninteresting, you lose the will to participate.
- Anxiety/Panic: You are imagining a future that does not align with your heart’s true desires and worrying about what it will be like when you get there.
- Numbness/Boredom: The internal struggle has become so great that rather than feel the pain of disallowing the call, you have decided not to feeling anything at all.
What’s common to all of the above is that in each case you are being called along the path of your inspired work and at the same time, you are refusing to go. When we refuse the call, we are blocking the natural flow of creative life-force energy through our being. These negative emotions are all indicators that we are blocking this flow. If we insist on blocking this energetic flow indefinitely, it can eventually progress into physical pain, which is near impossible to ignore. However, it need not get that loud.
The good news is that all of these emotional indicators let you know that your inspired work is still calling you. If it weren’t, you wouldn’t feel the despair of not answering its call. The best news is that you can rehearse yourself into answering the call.
What makes it easier to answer the call
The simplest way to turn up the volume on the call from your inspired work is to nurture the relationship with your inner being:
- Appreciate the fact your inner being exists and that it is calling you
- Get to know its voice (i.e, the subtle signs as outlined above)
- Believe it has your best interest at heart
- Be willing to listen
- Do your best to minimize any tendency to resist
- Have faith in its guidance
- Trust in the unfolding path
- Allow yourself to go where you are being called to
- Notice what happens when you choose to answer the call
...
Your inspired work is calling you. It always has been, it always will be. When you choose to answer the call, you won’t be overwhelmed with having to walk the entire path at once. You will simply be called to the next step, and the next step on your journey. However, if you continue to ignore its call, not to worry, it will only get louder.
